These are the 5 watercolour landscapes you will learn to paint

Desert

This scene captures the essence of an imagined desert, with warm earthy tones, bright high-contrast lighting, dry grassy shrubs, and scattered cacti. It offers the opportunity to practice valuable techniques while exploring an unusual juxtaposition—the presence of ocean shells in a desert setting, where they wouldn’t typically be found. This unexpected combination adds a compelling visual contrast, enhancing the scene’s dreamlike quality.

Forest

Painting forest scenes is always exciting—they immediately transport you into a moody, mysterious world beneath a dense canopy of leaves. In this piece, you’ll focus on atmospheric lighting and the power of color to create depth and emotion. At the heart of the scene stands a twisted, ancient tree, rich with untold stories. Its striking presence makes it a captivating focal point, making the process of re-creating this artwork both engaging and rewarding.

Underwater

The cosmic whale, with its green-spotted markings and glowing tubercles, has been a recurring subject in my artwork, but this is its first time appearing beneath the water’s surface. Underwater scenes aren’t typically associated with landscape painting, yet they offer a fascinating and rewarding challenge. This piece will help you explore glazing techniques and refine your pigment control. You'll focus on creating depth by softening the background to suggest the limited visibility of an underwater world while bringing sharp details to the whale’s eye, drawing the viewer into the scene.

Snow

This snow scene is a fun opportunity to create a unique colour palette that captures the magic of a winter sunset. By using a limited palette, you’ll learn how to mix a wide range of soft, glowing hues from just a few base colours, helping you create a scene that feels both warm and mysterious. Working with fewer pigments allows all the colours to naturally relate to one another, giving your painting a sense of unity and atmosphere. It also encourages more thoughtful mixing and helps you explore how transparent watercolour can be layered to build depth, mood, and light. As you paint, you’ll see how delicate washes and subtle overlaps can suggest snow, fading light, and the quiet magic of a snowy evening—making full use of watercolour’s natural luminosity and flow.

Space

This final scene is a surreal tribute to my favourite fish. It features a majestic grouper soaring through the cosmos, gliding past a glowing planet that casts a soft, radiant light across its body. Set against the deep black of space, the scene blends the oceanic with the celestial, evoking a sense of freedom, mystery, and quiet wonder. In this project, I encourage you to explore your own creative colour scheme using just a few of your favourite colours. It’s the perfect subject to let your imagination run free and create something uniquely beautiful.
